[GA4] How to Create Conversion Metrics for Each Goal Similar to UA
This article introduces how to create custom metrics for the number of occurrences of uniquely created events in GA4, using "Event Parameters" and "Custom Metrics".
In GA4, if multiple conversions such as "contact us" or "request for materials" were set, until February 2024, only the total was displayed under the metric "conversions", and it was necessary to create custom metrics to display each conversion count individually. However, starting from February 2024, similar to UA, metrics for each conversion like "number of contacts completed" or "number of material requests completed" (the actual metric names are "conversions:event name") are automatically generated. Therefore, it has become unnecessary to create custom metrics for events that are set as conversions. (※Added on February 11, 2023)
Steps to Create Conversion Metrics for Each Goal in GA4
The process is simple and can be completed in just two steps. This article is easy enough for anyone to follow along, so please give it a try.
- Set up event parameters
- Create custom metrics
This time, for a site that has set up multiple conversions such as "trial" and "inquiry," we will create a metric based on the number of conversions for "trial."
How to Set Up Event Parameters
Step 1
From the GA4 menu, select "Admin" > "Data Streams" > "Events," and then click on "Create Event" in the upper right corner of the screen that appears.
Step 2
Here, the custom events that have already been set up will be displayed, so select the "trial" event that we are focusing on this time.
Step 3
Click on "Add Modification" under "Parameter Configuration."
Step 4
Once the configuration screen is displayed, enter:
- "Parameter": a name that will be easy to understand later (this time, we used "trial_count")
- "New Value": "1"
Then, click the "Save" button in the upper right corner to complete the process.
How to Create Custom Metrics
Next, we will create custom metrics using the event parameters set earlier. By doing this, they become available as metrics.
Step 1
From the GA4 menu, select "Admin" > "Data display" > "Custom definitions," and the following screen will appear. Switch the tab to "Custom metrics," then click on "Create custom metrics" in the upper right corner.
Step 2
Once the custom metric settings screen is displayed,
- Metric Name: Enter the name set for the event parameter (this time it's "trial_count")
- Event Parameter: Enter the name set for the event parameter (this time it's "trial_count")
- Unit of measurement: Standard
Enter these details, then click the "Save" button in the upper right corner to complete the process.
Methods to Check the Conversion Metrics You Have Created
The conversion metrics you have created are now available in GA4's Exploration reports and in Looker Studio. We will explain how to view and use them in each case.
How to Check in Exploration Reports
The metric "trial_count" is available for use, so you can check it by setting it up just like a regular metric.
How to Set Up This Report
- Dimension: Session source / medium
- Metrics: Sessions, trial_count
- Technique: Free form
- Visualization: Table
- Cell Type: Bar chart
For more details on how to use Exploration Reports, please see "[GA4] How to Use Exploration Reports | Sharing Methods and Recommended Templates."
How to Use in Looker Studio
Similarly, in Looker Studio, the metric "trial_count" is available, so you can check it by setting it up just like a regular metric.
For more details on how to use Looker Studio, please see "The Complete Guide to Using GA4 × Looker Studio (formerly Data Portal) | Integration Methods and Report Creation Methods."
