Advantages of using Looker Studio for GA4 reporting

Data can be obtained in the past 14 months.

First of all, in the GA4 administration screen, only the "Exploratory Report" allows users to set their own items, and the only way to create reports on the GA4 administration screen is to use this Exploratory Report. However, exploratory reports are currently used for personal analysis, and are difficult to use them creating reports due to various restrictions.

For instance, while reports other than GA4's exploratory reports can select data for the entire period regardless of the data retention period, exploratory reports are affected by the data retention period. For example, a common graph such as a year-on-year comparison of the number of sessions In the past year would require data for the past 24 months, which is not possible with the exploratory report.

The Looker Studio is not affected by the data retention period and can produce the time-series reports.

Complimentary daily reports and automatically updated.

Reports created in the Looker Studio are automatically updated when created, eliminating the need to create a large number of reports at the start of every month. In addition, users can modify the time period displayed in the report and use filters to narrow the focus of the report, and the interactive dashboard features are enhanced.

Over 700 different connectors for connection to various data.

More than 700 connectors are available, including GA4, Google Analytics, Search Console, Google Ads, and other Google-based media, as well as advertising data such as Facebook ads and Yahoo ads, and SNS data such as Instagram and Twitter. The data of various services can be connected.
This allows you to create a single report that combines data from GA4, Search Console, and Google Ads.

Can be shared in various ways, including automatic email and PDF download.

The Looker Studio, like a spreadsheet, allows anyone to access the latest data by sharing a URL. The data can also sent automatically by email each morning to concerned parties with the previous day's performance data, or downloaded in PDF format for use as reporting materials.

How to link GA4 x Looker Studio and create reports

Using the Looker Studio is very simple: Create a data source, then create a report using that data source, and simply share it when the report is complete.

Create a GA4 data source

Open the Looker Studio and select "Data Sources" in "Create" on the home screen.

Select "Google Analytics" from the screen of connectors list.

Select the target GA4 account

Once you have granted the Looker Studio access to your Google Analytics account, you will see the Google Analytics account properties view available. For GA4, there is no view, so as shown in the figure below, select the property that begins with GA4|. Select it and choose "Connect" in the upper right corner.

Make sure you're signed in to a Google account with Google Analytics privileges for the subject you wish to report on.Please work only with the Google account above connected(all other Google accounts need to log out). Google may not be able to switch to the desired Google account.

You have now successfully created your GA4 data source.

After the connection, you will be redirected to the list of fields screen as indicated in the figure below, and you have completed the creation of the data source. Select "Create Report" in the upper right corner to proceed to creating the report.

Create a GA4 report according to the data source you created.

Add a graph

When the report generation screen is displayed, go to "Add Graph" and select a format to create a graph. In this case, we will select a time series graph.

Configure graph settings.

The edit screen will displays on the right side, where you can configure settings related to the graph. ou can configure detailed parameters such as dimensions, indicators and filters to be used on the graph.

In this case, we added page titles as a breakdown, and created a chronological graph of page displays by page title.

Set the style

Changing the tab on the editing screen to "Style" will switch to the design settings screen. You can customize colors and sizes of graphs, fonts, backgrounds, etc. in detail, So let's create a graph that is easy to read.

This time, I designed a dark version with a dark background.

Share Reports

Add people(individualy)

Select "Share" in the upper right corner, enter the email address of the target (linked to your Google account), then select either "Viewer" or "Editor", and select "Send" in the same way as for managing permissions on Google Spreadsheets.

Add individuals(Batch assignment to multiple users)

You can select any item from the Link settings and share it by URL.

Download as PDF

After selecting "Share" in the upper right corner, select "Download Report", then select the page to download and choose "Download".

Frequently asked questions about GA4 x Looker Studio

Is there a manual for the Looker Studio?

Please refer to the official help section of Looker Studio. If you are unable to find the answer, you can also throw a question through the official help forum. You will not always get an answer, but in the case of a bug or other problem, Google will response your question.

Report shows dataset setup error

In November 2022, Google sets an API allocation limit for GA4, and if this API allocation limit is exceeded, an error will occur. We did not hear any error reports from GA360 users because the limit is approximately 10 times that of the free version.

Google recommends the following measures, but we recommend using an extraction data source that is free to use and  avoids the error with the least  effort.

  • Reduce traffic to the report
  • Reduce the amount of graphs on each page
  • Use an extracted data source
  • Use BigQuery
  • Upgrade to GA360

I would like to display the number of page views, but I can't find it.

Please use "impressions," which means the number of page viewed on the GA4 management screen, as "views" is used in the Looker Studio index.

For example, the names of the items on the GA4 management screen and the Looker Studio may be different.

Is the segment feature available?

Segment functionality has not been implemented at this time. Only filters are available. (as of December 2022)

How do you display the number of conversions?

In UA, the number of conversions for each goal could be selected, But in GA4, only the indicator "conversions" exists, and the number of conversions for each goal is not included in the indicator.

Which dimension should I use for the Inflow Pathway Report?

Use "Session Referrer" and "Session Media" If you want to view a single string as referrer/media, as was the case with UA, use the following calculated fields.

If you would like to display the first path of the converted user, rather than the path of the inflow immediately before the conversion, use the "User Referrer" and "User Media".

(function of calculated field)

CONCAT(session referrer, " / " ,session media)

CONCAT(user referrer, " / " ,user media)
